Types of Gear and What to Look For

If you’re looking to buy your own gear, we’d suggest starting your own pair of boxing gloves because they get sweaty and it’s nice to not have to share. But, you don’t necessarily need elite expensive gloves as you’re getting started.

Here are a few things to think about and gear we have enjoyed using to help you get started.

Gloves

Boxing gloves: Often found in 10, 12 or 16 oz varieties. Choose what feels good. 10 oz or 12 oz should work find for beginners.

Open-finger gloves: Not essential, but can be nice to have for classes where you are trapping and striking (like Jun Fan or Philipino Martial Arts) because they allow you grip when necessary.

Mitts & Pads

Focus Mitts: Versatile mitts used in many styles of training. We recommend a flatter (versus curved) mitt.

Thai Pads: These larger, rectangular pads are considered essentials for Muay Thai practitioners, but we have these available for beginners if you want to wait to invest.

Protective Gear

Shin guards: Muay Thai classes (and occasional Jun Fan kick defenses) may warrant shin guards, but all drills are designed to be safe for beginners.

Gear like mouth guards or belly pads would only be employed for advanced classes or sparring training.
